Artist in Residence
Luther takes pride in bringing one or more "Artist in Residence" to campus.
During the time of residency, the Luther community has an opportunity to meet with the artist and learn about their area of expertise, and the artist works with each class of students to create something unique.
These experiences enhance learning as they are integrated with curriculum objectives in many different subject areas.
Luther Memorial School welcomed Artist in Residence actor and visual artist Kevin Reese who presented A Perfect Balance in the school gym.
Following his multi-media performance, Mr. Reese introduced the students to the art of mobiles and their key design element – balance – in a series of workshops. The students were encouraged to think abstractly and work cooperatively as they constructed their own mobiles. Other Artists in Residence have included:
- Percussionist-- David Vita
- Writer-- Deborah Ritz
- Potter-- Amy Chaplin
- Stained Glass Artist-- Mary McNeil
- Richmond Times Dispatch columnist-- Stacy Hawkins Adams
Ms. McNeil’s residency produced a beautiful stained glass panel of nine different Christian symbols that hangs in the school foyer.
Richmond Times Dispatch columnist Stacy Hawkins Adams coordinated a series of presentations and experiences intended to immerse Luther students in the art of journalism. The end result of this project was a student produced newspaper.
